[HOW-TO] BACKUP AND RESTORE WINDOWS 8 ACTIVATION

BACKUP AND RESTORE WINDOWS 8 ACTIVATION
ATM
WHY TO BACKUP??
Because every time you format and reinstall, you need to activate Windows again : looking for a valid MAK key, calling Micro$oft or waiting for a KMS server to go online.. That’s a PAIN

So here I’m going to explain how to backup and restore activation status on Windows 8 OS using
ATM (ADVANCE TOKEN MANGER)

-> BACKUP YOUR ACTIVATION
  1. DOWNLOAD  ADVANCED TOKEN MANAGER (~1.6mb), extract the zip file and run the executable.
  2. Click “Activation Backup” button.
  3. Click “Yes” to confirm (backup process will take only few moments).
Once it’s done, a folder named “Windows Activation Backup” will appear in the same folder that you launched the tool from, it contains the backup (DO NOT MODIFY ANYTHING INSIDE! )

* OPTIONAL: Now that you have your own backup, it’s recommended to place* it in safe storage media to prevent any accidental deletion/damage
(*move the folder containing both tool and backup somewhere safe)

-> RESTORE THE ACTIVATION

Let’s suppose that you have formatted your PC and now you’re running on a new Windows installation
If you took backup of your activation before formatting your PC
–>>Go to the backup folder and run ADVANCED TOKEN MANAGER again and  this time you will see “Activation Restore” instead of “Activation Backup“.
2. Click on “Activation Restore” button.
3. Confirm to start restoration.
It’ll take 1~5 minutes, network connection will be disabled while restoring.
Congrats Restoration Completed Successfully :)
Now refresh your desktop, i bet the watermark has vanished ! BUT it’s always better to check activation status in System Properties, or by running slmgr.vbs -xpr in Command Prompt.

Manually snagging Tango update? Be forewarned, possible solution!

The CAB files for the Tango update became readily available sometime yesterday, which, if you’re into unofficially updating, means that you’re set to go in getting Tango without your OEM or carrier saying no. This is actually good, as it prevents OEM fixes that block homebrew exploits, etc. However, a certain discovery has been made by the community: the Tango update reverts your PortalURL settings, essentially allowing your phone to relock itself.Windows-Phone-Tango_thumb
Let’s break this down, then:
  • If you’re manually grabbing the Tango update, and have interop or some other unofficial unlock, your phone will be able to automatically revert the lock by “calling home”.
  • When the Tango update becomes available in Zune, the result will be exactly the same. In short, this has nothing to do with manually updating.
So what can you do? Well, there is hope. Since the relocking only occurs by calling home, you can actually block the connection for long enough to restore your prevent-relock settings. This hasn’t been tested, but these steps should work:
1. Download the CAB files and follow the instructions in this post. Also, download this: relockPrevent.xap. You probably should make a backup, too.
2. Put your phone in Airplane mode.
3. Disconnect your internet.
Alternatively, you can navigate to %systemroot%/system32/drivers/etc and edit the hosts file, adding this line to the end:
192.168.1.1 developerservices.windowsphone.com
This will prevent your phone from being able to connect to Microsoft’s servers through your computer’s internet, and is generally a good thing to do. I have never had a phone relock, and while this may not entirely block this, it does serve as a fairly effective blocking measure, at least in my case.
4. Install the CAB files, as explained in Heathcliff’s thread. Keep your phone in airplane mode and your internet connection off, as we do not want your phone connecting to the internet when it finishes installing the update.
5. With your interop-unlock still alive at this point, deploy the  file to your phone. Give it Trusted access in Root Tools, and run it. Press Prevent Relock, and your phone should now be safe.
6. Reconnect your internet, and take your phone off airplane mode. Done.

How to Show “New Windows Updates Available” Notification Icon in Windows 8 Taskbar?

It seems the list of features which have been removed from Microsoft’s new OS Windows 8 will never end. Almost all people know that Microsoft has removed Start Menu and Start button from Windows 8. Microsoft has also removed Aero glass transparency from Windows 8 which was one of most interesting and eye catching features of Windows Vista and Windows 7.
And now its turn of the built-in “Windows Update” program. All Windows versions come with “Windows Update” application which automatically downloads and installs important updates and hotfixes released by Microsoft to improve Windows performance, security and to fix problems and vulnerabilities found in the OS.
By default Windows Update does its job automatically but you can change its settings and can ask it to notify you about the new updates before downloading or installing them. To customize its settings, open Windows Update from Control Panel and click on “Change settings” link given in left sidebar.
